In haute pursuit of Pedregal’s stunning villas: A deserved reputation for luxury, privacy and style is at the heart of the community’s allure.

A Magnificent Pedregal Villa:
Villa de los Sueños del Pedregal

At the tip of the Baja Peninsula, spectacular rock formations rise like the back of an arching whale, defining the boundary between the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. These granite peaks descend into the depths at Land’s End, also known as “Finisterra,” and its iconic arch. Nestled among the desert hills and overlooking two seas are the magnificent homes of Cabo’s premier neighborhood—Pedregal.
The grande dame of Cabo San Lucas residential communities, Pedregal’s multi-million dollar estates and picturesque cobblestone roads have earned it a reputation as the “Beverly Hills of Mexico.” Thirty years ago, Cabo San Lucas was still a sleepy fishing village when Mexico City developer Don Manuel Díaz Rivera recognized the untapped potential of the destination, with its sunshine and recreational opportunities. In 1974, Díaz Rivera purchased 360 acres of barren land above town, moved his family to Cabo, and undertook the creation of what would become one of the world’s most prestigious addresses. Don Manuel envisioned “a place where peace and harmony sit on every corner and tranquility resides in every heart”—a private, gated community offering security, exquisite architecture, natural beauty and a refined lifestyle.
Timeless Class, Modern Luxury. Despite three decades of growth, the Mediterranean-inspired community manages to hold onto its old-world atmosphere while embracing the contemporary. Now home to 300+ residences ranging in size from 3,000 to 20,000 sq. feet, stringent architectural guidelines maintain the character of the neighborhood, complement the natural surroundings and maximize the vast views.

Villa Descanso

What makes Pedregal so special? Fred Faltersack, who has built several homes in the community, explains that Pedregal offers the best of all worlds: “You’re in this incredibly luxurious neighborhood but you’re just minutes to all the action downtown. If you want views of the marina and the city lights at night, you can have that from the bay side. If you want seclusion, the Pacific side feels worlds away.” Faltersack originally came to Cabo as a tourist. Before long, Faltersack fell for Pedregal’s siren song and made the leap to ownership, subsequently building several beautiful homes including Villa Descanso and Villa Gran Vista.
Falling hopelessly in love with Pedregal seems to be a recurring theme. Jamie De Vera stayed in hotels during his first few trips to Cabo. After several visits, a friend suggested renting a villa in Pedregal for a company event. As it turns out, De Vera booked Villa Buena Vida, a magnificent 10-bedroom home built high into the Pacific-facing cliffs. De Vera admired the sweeping ocean views, the sense of privacy and the striking architecture, and was soon tracking down the owner to make an offer. As they say, the rest is history.

Villa Bellissima

This remarkable setting, straddling the desert mountains and offering spectacular vistas, has inspired many an architectural magnum opus. The passion Pedregal inspires is abundantly evident when Andy Hites describes his new Villa Bellissima. Hites originally came to Cabo as a fisherman in the early 1980’s when, as he says, “you couldn’t even buy charcoal briquettes in Cabo.” When he won Cabo’s famous Bisbee marlin tournament in 1996, he was already considering the construction of a home in Pedregal. Hites worked with architect Jacinto Avalos to design a contemporary work of art: a home with views to Land’s End, two swimming pools, furniture imported from Puebla, and a custom dining table that took 25 men to transport up to the house. Hites says he loves that “birds soar at the level of the villa; it feels like you’re on top of the world.”

Villa Clara Vista

Villa Clara Vista is another Pedregal show-stopper. Owner Steve Welsh first came to Cabo in 1999 for a long weekend with his wife, Claire. Charmed by the contrast of desert and sea, they were soon shopping for a construction lot. When they reached the present site of Villa Clara Vista, situated 450 ft. above sea level and looking due south at the Pacific Ocean, as Welsh explains, “it was a no-brainer.” The resulting Mediterranean-style villa, designed by Byrl Binkley, has been featured in photo shoots for Victoria’s Secret and the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders.
Offering privacy, stunning views, security and unbeatable proximity to the action of Cabo, a villa in the Pedregal is ideal for the vacation of a lifetime. |
